“What can I do?” – Thomas Tuchel responds to Romelu Lukaku’s poor performance vs Crystal Palace

Chelsea beat Crystal Palace away at Selhurst Park on Saturday but it wasn’t a classic Chelsea performance as they had to wait till the 89th minute for the winning goal which came through Hakim Ziyech.

Most notable amongst Chelsea’s underwhelming performers at Selhurst Park was Romelu Lukaku who once again struggled to get in the game as he set an unwanted record of touching the ball only seven times, the fewest for a player who has played the entire 90 minutes of a game.

Chelsea coach Thomas Tuchel faced the media earlier today ahead of Chelsea’s champions league round of 16 clash vs Lille tomorrow and he gave a candid response when asked about Lukaku’s underwhelming involvement against Crystal Palace.

Thomas Tuchel: “What can I do? I don’t know. Now we have to deal with it. The data speaks a certain language, he was not involved, it’s sometimes like this with strikers.”

Thomas Tuchel: “It’s not what we or Romelu wants, it’s also not the time to laugh and make jokes about him. We will protect him.”

Romelu Lukaku has scored just five league goals since his big money move from Inter last summer and there’s a lot of pressure on the Belgian to deliver given his price tag. Hence, both Thomas Tuchel and the striker need to find a solution as soon as possible.
