Chelsea face Brazilian club Palmeiras in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup as both sides seek to win their first ever club world cup trophy.
It’s still quite a debate who will be in goal for Chelsea when they square up against Palmeiras on Saturday as second choice goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga has hardly put a foot wrong in the absence of first choice, Edouard Mendy who just returned from a triumphant AFCON tournament with Senegal.
Kepa was fantastic in goal for Chelsea in the semi-final and his teammate Mendy recognizes the fact that he’s got a big competitor challenging for his number 1 position at the club.
“He [Kepa] did a fantastic job when I was at AFCON, even before. We all know how good he is and this is why you play for Chelsea. You are the best player in every position.” Mendy told the Chelsea website.
“You have to be ready, to fight for your place. Yes, we work really well with Marcus [Betinelli] also and the goalkeeper coach, Hilario. I think it’s very good teamwork. The team is most important.”
The FIFA Club World Cup is the last piece of the jigsaw left in completing Roman Abrahmovic’s trophy laden era as Chelsea owner. Hence, Saturday’s game is one of the biggest games in the history of the Blues and as such Thomas Tuchel will be aiming to spur his men to victory.
